Funding

Grant:

A grant is a way the government funds your ideas projects to provide public services and stimulate the economy. Grants support critical recovery initiatives, innovative research, and many other programs listed in the catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA). Financial assistance given by charitable organisations (also known grant giving funds) to people in need. Grants can be given as money, products or services that don't have to be paid back.

Advertising:

Advertising is a big part in radio drama especially to local businesses or  nation advertisers will help with funding. Advertisers will try to reach to the target audience especially if its beneficial to what they're trying to sell, making specific radio station important for them.

Sponsorship:

Sporships are vitaal for radio stations. They provide revenue, support, operations and enhance credibility.

I'll want sponsorships that are sports related, Educationally related or ones that support the youth. I'll name every sponsor at the beginning of the episode.

Crowdfunding:

These platforms could be used to raise the funding for the actual radio drama. It'll also give the drama some sort of recognition towards it as people will want to know more about the show they're investing money into. Platforms such as KickStarter and GoFundMe can be seen as very useful and help with these type of things.

With certain amount of donations will come different gifts given to the audience such as exclusives and merchandise

Partnerships:

I'll do partnerships with local schools, clubs, or community clubs that may be interested in supporting the radio drama and helping out financially if possible.

Audio assets (new)

Scene 1

Audio Assets:

  • Basketball bouncing, sneakers squeaking, group laughter, gym echo

Why Needed:
These sounds instantly set the location (a lively training gym) and show the chemistry between characters. The laughter also contrasts with the narration, helping the audience hear that even in fun moments, Shiloh carries hidden emotional weight.

Scene 2

Audio Assets:

  • Phone typing, quiet ambience, cough, pause/silence

Why Needed:
The phone typing reveals Shiloh’s distraction and anxiety. The cough and awkward silence build tension and expose his insecurity non-verbally. The stillness around him highlights isolation in the moment.

Scene 3

Audio Assets:

  • Outdoor street sounds, distant basketball, casual chatter, phone swipe

Why Needed:
Transitions us from the indoor gym to an open social environment. Felipe’s heavy breathing and chatter add realism, while Shiloh scrolling and showing his phone pushes the plot forward.

Scene 4

Audio Assets:

  • Bass-heavy music, footsteps, sudden silence, crowd reaction

Why Needed:
Sets an immediate shift in energy—bassy music signals tension. Footsteps approaching create suspense. Silence gives impact to Kermit’s entrance. Phone audio and video memes bring in a layer of social media influence—key to the theme of cyberbullying.

Scene 5

Audio Assets:

  • Heartbeat or low ambient drone, echo effect (optional), voice crackling

Why Needed:
As Shiloh reveals his emotional pain, the atmosphere must shift. Subtle sounds (heartbeat or low drone) emphasize vulnerability. Echoes or voice effects can show flashbacks or the internal pain he carries.

Scene 6

Audio Assets:

  • Sneakers shuffling, basketball bouncing, crowd murmurs, rising music

Why Needed:
Energy is rising. The sounds of confrontation and a live court atmosphere make the scene feel alive. Music rising mirrors rising stakes and confidence among Shiloh’s team.

Scene 7

Audio Assets:

  • Music swell, court echo, trash talk, subtle crowd noises

Why Needed:
This cliffhanger moment needs intensity. The music swells to leave the audience excited. Trash talk adds hype, while ambient basketball sounds prepare listeners for the game to come.

Sound considerations.

 Sound format:

I'd like to use a high quality audio format to enable to best sound possible for radio. I'd use a WAV (A lossless, uncompressed format and high quality, making it suitable for video and music production purposes). or a AIFF (it has uncompressed audio’s which maintains the audios data in its purest form, ensuring the highest possible sound quality).

Storage:

For storage I'd most likely want to use a cloud storage this is so I can save my data online and it's probably a more safer option as If I remember my log in details I shouldn't have any issue with losing it.

Compression:

For compression I'd use an electronic unit a DRC which reduces the volume of loud sounds and amplifying quiet sounds by narrowing or 'compressing' an audio signal.

File size versus Quality:

I'd use a Lossless which compresses every single bit of data that was originally in the file remains and there is no loss of quality from the original recording.

Location Reccie

Quality: After doing tests in my location I was able to conduct many different things that are related to the place of recording. The sound conducts a good quality which will work on the aesthetic of the show as the realism is what I aim to achieve. As well as this, I also made sure to do safety checks before hand and saw that the indoor basketball court is a safe environment with no hazards which may make the working environment more enjoyable. Due to the court being very spacious it'll allow for the actors to move around more freely making it easier for the actors to feel pleasant in their work space, The sound quality is what you'd expect from a basketball court and this offers much more authenticity for the listeners making it easier to envision. The court is usually occupied so I'd have to either record during lesson hours or after school hours to make sure no background noise will be getting picked up. Majority of the casting crew already is in the school therefore they're familiar with their surroundings and are comfortable in their environment.

Quality: After doing tests on my second location I was able to conduct many different things that are related to the place of recording. Everything in the outdoor basketball court is surrounded by metal fences. Although the court is outside the sound quality however can vary because since its located in a park we don't know when the park will be busy or have people making loud sounds in the background, this could disturb the recording process and elongate production, I've analysed the safety precautions and although the court is on concrete I've seen nothing on the court that can be hazardous the only thing the actors would have to look out for is falling over and harming themselves

Quality of audio: After testing audio in different environments, I came to a realisation that the sports hall was the best choice for me to choose because it makes sense with the radio drama and the overall narrative, specifically the opening scene for my radio drama. Me filming on location also makes the entirety of the radio drama more practical and immersive for the audience the sounds of basketball’s being used further reinforces this idea of it all being immersive. All the equipment I need will be in the sports hall anyways so it will make the final product more believable rather than a fake/artificial background being used, the sports hall is also sizeable making it easier for more people to be able to record in the same space increasing the realism. The one downfall of this location however is that I'd have to make sure the space in the sports hall isn’t being used as this could disturb productivity of the radio. In terms of recording the sports room is easily accessible, no money is being spent on travelling making it more convenient especially with the actors already attending the school

Outline

Treatment

Title/Type of programme

The title of the radio "High's and lows" serves as the main point for the show. The title of the show reflects the plot in the story and what's going to happen in future of the plot it plays a significant role in my story and I'm aspiring it to be a constant theme in my radio drama as those words will be repeated in the story I'm making, the title will an embodiment in throughout the show. The show is a sports radio drama and the target audience for this radio show will be around 15-19 years of age this is because of the content that will be shown I think it'll attract a much younger audience.

Sound effects:

Since my recorded will be located at "Chadwell Heath Academy" I'll use sound effects such as eating in a canteen, sounds of a basketball court/ training, students walking past/ students talking during break and lunch, and finally I'll add students talking during lesson.

atmospheric sound:

Atmospheric sounds such as rain on gravel, birds chirping (nature), machinery noise the sound of distant speech and movement will play a role in my drama as most shots will be recorded outside but when inside atmospheric sounds such as the ball bouncing and the sound of basketball shoes against the floor would play a role as well.

music:

In my drama music will play a role this is because I want to fulfil the basketball culture as much as I can and want to offer that vibe to the audience. One thing I have to make sure is that the music I pick isn't copyrighted either

dialogue:

Dialogue in this drama will play a crucial role because I want to create an atmosphere where everything being said is realistic and relatable to the audience. Since it is also a radio drama dialogue has to play a crucial role to the drama and I look for every speech to be spoken with enough enthusiasm.

Target audience/demographic:

The target audience in my show will be targeted towards people between the ages of 15-20 year olds and the demographic for this will also be people who enjoy sports, specifically basketball this is who I'd aim my work towards. The demographic for this would be aimed towards kids of any race and backgrounds it isn't targeted towards a race in particular just towards anyone who enjoys watching sports/basketball.

Running order (Publish from word):

scheduling and alignment to programme genre:

When thinking about Scheduling the first thing that comes to mind is how its going to be suitable for the audience to listen to, with Summer around the corner a lot of young people will be outside with friends, spending time on holiday or doing activities with family members this would mean that the i'd have to schedule it around a time where everyone would be coming back home to relax and enjoy the show. And so with this knowledge i'd schedule this show around mid-afternoon times around 18:00-19:00.

And so focusing on how my programme is going to align it is about how a student athlete believing he is number 1 in the country due to what social media is hyping him up to be. This means it can draw in a wider variety of listeners as they would know that social media could have a negative effect on someones ego and what it could lead too.

Launch date:

The launch date for this date for this programme will have to be around summer times where students are finished with exams, families are booking holidays and adults are finishing off with work. It'll be a great opportunity for people to surface the internet and go over what is new and what they could binge into, they could eventually find my shows and find out the drawback social media could have on someones attitude as a whole. This makes it relevant to the launch as people will understand the effects that social media has on student-athletes.

Although, it isn't targeted towards adults since it is in summer time it helps adults to surface the internet and possibly understand the effects of social media on student athletes letting them open a window in which their child isn't comfortable or keen on opening.

Research

BBC radio 4 (Radio drama) - The Hotel

In BBC's radio "The Hotel" the radio drama is 14 minutes long and the show covers many different conventions and we see these throughout its episodes. the radio drama "The Hotel" has the narrator talk about the "The Hotel" in a 3rd person type of view as if the place is actually a real person. The writer, Daisy Johnson is a British novelist and story righter. Her debut novel, Everything under, was shortlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize, making her the youngest nominee in the prize's history. The radio drama is a horror thriller and it has many different conventions which make this clear and easier to understand. In the show it uses sound to create tension when the narrator explains the events and what occurs inside the hotel and mysterious deaths within the hotel, eerie music is played and this is what rises the tension in the scenes and what gives it this thriller feeling we feel as if something will happen and we really feel the presence of the hotel although it isn't real at all.

This show fulfils the remit of the BBC remit to entertain it's viewers to educate, inform and entertain. This show focusses solely on the entertainment side of things as nothing on it educates or informs us on anything we see that. I can also add on that since its made to educate the show's target audience would mainly sway away from a younger audience so I'd it sways between the age of 16-22 year olds who are interested in fantasy thriller stories.

Another way sound is used to create tension in this would be through the voice acting the narrator reads in a manner where it's spooky enough to grab your attention to what's going on in the narrative. We see this in ( ) where the narrator talks about what's happened to the author that lived in the hotel and her final message before passing. The way everything is said is hair-rising and this is brilliantly done to fit the convention of the show (Horror-Thriller).
